The cruiser left the roadway and crashed into the woods, coming to rest approximately 100 feet into the wood line, WJCL reported.

The deputy was rushed to Liberty Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity has not been released.

Investigators are also waiting for a warrant to be issued so they can search the vehicle and nearby property.

“It’s just unfortunate that this happens when people fail to stop for law enforcement and anytime anyone loses their life in the law enforcement field, it’s a tragedy and it’s just a bad thing for the county of Long County today,” Georgia State Patrol Troop Commander Captain Thornell King told WTOC.
