Gene Walsh, who went up to the head NBCThe Press and Publicity departments of both coasts during a three-decade career in the chain, has died. He was 87 years old.
Walsh joined NBC’s Press and Advertising department in New York in 1961 and worked in the magazine, trade, and program advertising units. He was promoted to head of the 50-member department in 1973 and was named vice president of the network two years later. In 1977, he was transferred to Burbank and headed the 45-member Press and Publicity department until his retirement in 1991.
He was the architect of the 1975 ad campaign who is credited with being a major contributor to the success and continuation of NBC’s groundbreaking campaign. Saturday night live. “The highlight of being at NBC was working with now-legendary executives, the highly respected Grant Tinker and the highly creative Brandon Tartikoff,” Walsh said in his retirement speech. “In 1981, Grant left his profitable MTM Productions and signed a five-year contract as president of NBC. “Grant and Brandon brought the best writers, producers, and actors to NBC by giving them reins for practically free,” he continued. “For the 1985-86 season, with a calendar that includes quality programming Cheers Hill Street Blues and Cosby, NBC came out of the basement: it won the primetime audience race for the first time, dominated the Emmys, and stayed on top for a decade. ”
Walsh also started NBC Press’s first cost-recovery program, selling the department’s publicity materials (stories, images, and features) to the many distribution companies that distribute NBC’s canceled shows to stations.
He served as Governor and Chairman of the Television Academy Public Relations Committee and in 1985 was one of the founding members of the Television Advertising Executives Committee. Walsh was also a member of the Museum of Television and Radio and a long-time member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer of Southern California sports broadcasters.
He began his career as a sports reporter and columnist for a local newspaper in Upstate New York and also played radio games before joining NBC.
