Eric Pierson was charged with first-degree murder Saturday after the body of Erika Verdecia, 33, was found in a canal near Fort Lauderdale, according to police. A Florida man, who was convicted of killing a teenage girl in 1993, confessed to stabbing a woman to death with a screwdriver after being released from prison, police said.

Pierson admitted to stabbing the missing woman four times with a screwdriver on September 25. The convicted murderer was not formally charged with the murder until Verdecia’s remains were discovered. The convicted killer, who stands 6 feet 8 inches tall, was released last September after serving 27 years of a 40-year sentence for strangling 17-year-old Kristina Whitaker to death.
Whitaker’s murder prompted officials to push for longer prison sentences and required convicts to fulfill at least 85 percent of their offers. However, the new law could not be retroactively applied to Pierson, who was also convicted of slaughtering a woman in 1985. Why is this guy on the streets? Police linked Pierson to Verdecia’s disappearance after friends said they last saw her at a sandwich shop with a “filthy” man who identified himself as the killer. “I went crazy,” Carme said, according to reports. “I told (the police) that they saw my daughter with a murderer. And then they started looking for her. But it was too late. ”
Police found blood on Pierson’s truck and his girlfriend informed him that he would look at the canal behind his house and say, “Damn that bitch sucks.” Verdecia left a 6-year-old daughter.
