The woman who died was 50 years old. Her husband had to be rescued after he was trapped under the large platform, according to the report. The man suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive. Two other men in the home were unharmed, according to the report. A woman in her 50s died after authorities said someone stole an 18-wheeler that crashed into a mobile home in northwest Harris County. The accident occurred overnight at 11500 McKinley Street. According to officials, it all started when they received a car theft call around 10:40 p.m. Monday after a large truck was robbed at 14700 Sommermeyer.
The large rig was stolen from a local trucking company in the Hempstead Highway and Gessner area, about 10 miles from the scene of the accident. The 18-wheeler was equipped with a GPS tracking system, allowing Houston Police Department units to find it. When police arrived, the suspect was still inside the 18-wheeler and led officers on a brief chase.
The suspect has been identified as Eric Black, 39. Black jumped out of the moving truck before he hit the house, police say. He was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries. Police told ABC13 that four people were inside the home at the time of the accident. A woman inside the home was listed as missing, but authorities later confirmed that she died.
A man was trapped under the 18-wheeler when officers arrived. His brother identified him as Jeff Conyers and said the woman who died was Conyers’ wife. Firefighters worked quickly to fix poles around the house to keep them from falling while saving Conyers. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but he is expected to survive.
Two other men inside the house were not injured.
According to police, Black has a long criminal record and was on probation for evading with a motor vehicle at the time of the theft of the 18-wheeler. Black faces charges of murder and reckless aggravated assault, both of which are felonies that collectively carry a minimum of 25 years in prison and a maximum of life. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office plans to ask a judge to put the suspect on bail without bail.
