Emmanuel Totaye Jr. and Daishawn Q. Gills, both of Des Moines, were charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of first degree robbery.

Emmanuel Totaye Jr. is  19 years old  and Daishawn Q. Gills, is 20 years old.

Charges and Arrested

Totaye was arrested Tuesday morning at his home in the 5800 block of Southeast Eighth Street.

Gills was already in police custody after being arrested Friday in connection to a drive-by shooting that left one woman injured. He was charged with willful injury, two counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon and attempted murder in that incident, according to a news release.

According to the Brothers of Devonte Swanks, 19, and Malachi Swanks, 16, and friend Thayne Wright, 15, were killed in the shooting Jan. 30.

Christina Duncan, the mother of the Swanks brothers, said their father Vinson Swanks found them and Wright dead inside a home in the 600 block of East Hackley Avenue.

The Des Moines brothers were generous and kind, Duncan said, doing “everything together.” Wright, a friend of Duncan’s sons, was a regular visitor to their home and was the “most respectful young man.”

The shooting was the second in Iowa’s capital this year that involved the death of brothers. Damiko L. Carr, 28, and Karyree Henderson, 21, both of Des Moines, were killed Jan. 15 in a shooting in the 2700 block of 51st Street. No arrests have been made in that case.

Last week’s fatal shootings brought the number of homicides in Des Moines to six in 2020. The shooting death of Josiah Woods, 14, early on New Year’s Day was the city’s first homicide of the year.

Investigation Report

Police arrived at the 2100 block of Evergreen Avenue to find a vehicle struck by gunshots with a 29-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman inside. The uninjured occupants told officers they saw two vehicles chasing each other after their vehicle was struck by gunfire.
