Ellen Sturm & Steve Barnes
In a 2020 feature on the law firm’s break-up, New York Magazine described Barnes as bringing Sturm into the law firm. A 2014 email from Ross Cellino to Steve Barnes was quoted in the article as reading:
When you approached me about having Ellen join the firm you assured me that your relationship with her would not interfere with the management of the firm.
The same statement was made about your brother. To your brother’s credit he has not interfered with the operation of the firm. The same cannot be said about Ellen.
The article said that Barnes and Sturm owned two lakefront homes in the Buffalo-area.
On her Cellino & Barnes profile, Sturm says that the “resilient spirits” and “the courage to go on in the face of adversity” are the qualities she sees regularly in her clients. Sturm says, “I take very seriously my commitment to do absolutely the best job that I can for them.” A letter to the Buffalo News during the coverage of the break-up of Cellino & Barnes said that Sturm and Barnes had been together for “over a decade.”
Cause of Death & Plan Crash
The pair have yet to be officially identified. But a source in Barnes’ law firm and another lawyer confirmed that he was piloting the plane at the time, the Buffalo News reported. Barnes is a pilot and owned the plane, two sources added to the paper.
Another source said Barnes and a female relative had been on board and were dead, the Buffalo News said.
The crash comes just three months after Barnes and former partner Ross Cellino, Jr. finally agreed to the terms of splitting their firm — but before the pair opened their separate offices.
The downed plane, a single-engine, propellor-powered Socata TBM 700, seats six and had left Buffalo en route to Manchester, NH, Localsyr.com report noted. The plane is registered to an address that matches Cellino & Barnes’ address, News 4 in Buffalo reported.
The Buffalo-based personal injury firm is known statewide for its ubiquitous, “Don’t wait! Call 8!” television ad jingle, which features their toll-free phone number, (800)888-8888.

At a press briefing on Friday afternoon, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office said that the plane had been traveling to Buffalo from Manchester, New Hampshire, when it crashed into a wooded area in Pembroke. The last contact the plane had made was when it left at 11:18 a.m. The office said that it appears as though Barnes and his niece were the only two onboard, but added they could not yet be certain.
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately return CBS News’ request for more information.
The plane was a Socata TBM 700 aircraft, according to the police. The aircraft is a single-engine turboprop that can carry up to six passengers, according to the manufacturer’s website.
Cellino & Barnes was one of the country’s largest personal injury law firms, before the pair agreed to dissolve it earlier this year. The firm, which had developed a cult following over the years, was known for its catchy jingle and inspired several skits on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”
