Dorian Pinson, who drowned in Lake Lanier in April 2021, the body of a drowning victim who had been missing since April was found in Lake Lanier. The Hall County Sheriff’s Office confirmed with 11Alive that Dorian Pinson’s family, 20, was notified Wednesday afternoon.
The teams were looking for a victim located in the same area in which Pinson dived. A private dive team found his body in Flowery Branch next to the Old Federal Camp Ground located near Sunrise Cove Marina, the area where Pinson and two other people were using a rented pontoon on April 18.
“The DNR and the Hall County dive team have limited resources,” said Richard Pickering of Lake Lanier Recovery Divers. “They spent about a week there. After a month had passed and the body had not been recovered, the family contacted us and asked if we could provide assistance. ”
Corpse dogs from the K-9 Forensic Unit, part of the Richland County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina, assisted in the search. The advanced probe technology was provided by Bruce’s Legacy, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit that assists in recovery efforts.

Dorian Pinson Body of Missing Victim Found
Dorian and his friends went boating on the infamous Lake Lanier on April 18. Unfortunately, she ended up being one of the many victims of the cursed lake and drowned that day. Around 86 days later, rescue teams finally managed to recover her body, thanks to the help of modern technology and the generosity of a Wisconsin-based nonprofit.
We have reported extensively on Lake Lanier here at MEAWW, with numerous people missing in the Georgia Reservoir. The “curse” has struck in other ways as well, such as explosions and fires. On July 4, an Independence Day celebration went awry when a pier on the lake sank while people were partying on it. During the weekend of July 4, 2020, two people drowned in the lake, prompting a viral message ever since that the lake was haunted.
Since 1994, approximately 200 people have died in the lake, one of the deadliest in the United States. Many of those victims have never been found, and the lake reaches a depth of 200 feet in some places. Fortunately for the Pinson family, that was not the case. They were finally able to say goodbye to her beloved son after her body was found on July 15.
As with most cases at Lake Lanier, there is a lot of confusion about what happened. WYFF 4 reported that Pinson had gone boating with two other friends on a rented pontoon. At some point, they fell or jumped off the pontoon into the lake. A passing boat was able to rescue Pinson’s friends, but the Greenville native never resurfaced. His two friends said they were unable to return to the boat due to the wind.

Hill County officials spent weeks trying to find Pinson’s body but suspended their efforts. Then in June, the family started a fundraising drive to hire a private dive team to continue the efforts. At that point, Alicia and Johnny Pinson, Dorian’s parents, quit their jobs and moved from Greenville to Gainesville to be closer to the crews. In the end, it was the private team that managed to locate the basketball star.
Bruce’s Legacy, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit, was credited with finding Pinson’s body. According to the website, the organization offers “search and recovery operations for drowning victims.” To help locate Pinson, the organization used a sector scan sonar and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Department of Natural Resources (DNR) public affairs officer Mark McKinnon told WYFF the team had been searching for five days, along with Georgia DNR law enforcement rangers, Bureau officers The Hall County Sheriff’s Office and the US Army Corps of Engineers also participated in the Lake Lanier Recovery Divers efforts.
Richard Pickering, who works with the organization, said the groups paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for technology and equipment out of his pocket. However, they refused to be compensated out of respect for Pinson’s family, 11 Alive reported. “During the five-day search, the rangers covered more than 300 acres of the lake using a grid search pattern. On the sixth day after the incident, they switched to surface searches and shore sweeps,” McKinnon said. After he was recovered, Pinson’s body was sent to the Crime Lab of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and turned over to the family an hour later.
Pinson was reportedly a professional basketball player, having played at Southside High School and Lincoln Memorial University. In 2018, he moved to Germany to represent Hebeisen White Wings Hanau. He has also played professionally in Israel and Canada, according to a German website.
