Host Dominique Samuels has been receiving backlash after calling Sam Smith ‘grotesque’ for his appearance in the controversial music video for his new song ‘I’m Not Here to Make Friends’. The British singer-songwriter, who came out as non-binary in 2019 and uses gender-neutral pronouns, released the song on Saturday, January 28, as part of his fourth album, ‘Gloria’.
Reflecting on the music video, the political commentator, 23, took to her Twitter account to share a post in which she called out the “Unholy” singer while doing a dig at the Hollywood industry. “Sam Smith is a perfect example of what Hollywood degenerate culture does to people. He makes celebrities vulgar, hypersexualized and obsessed with wearing his sexuality as a disguise and showing it to everyone’s face. And to make matters worse, the kids look up to this man!” she wrote on Sunday, January 29.
In a follow-up post, Samuels, who has appeared on BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky News, claimed that she loved listening to Smith but now “he” has cheapened her talent. “Can I just say that she used to love Sam Smith when he was making real music? Since then, he’s become downright grotesque, cheapening his talent and becoming a complete joke. Why doesn’t someone close to him tell him that he looks terrible? she added. “I think the same about Madonna, by the way. She has gone completely grotesque and actually quite sinister. I’m not saying this because Sam Smith is ‘non-binary’.”
Samuels’ post soon garnered immense attention on social media, with one user saying: “Literally who are you to comment on what he looks like? None of us is better than others. Be kind…” “Sam Smith had a number one for ten weeks last year, I’m pretty sure Sam Smith won’t give a fuck what you think,” another wrote, while a third said: “The fact That you used to love him before he came out as a fag and changed his pronouns tells you a lot more than you realize. He’s doing what he wants to do and it’s none of your business. Another user chimed in: “They’re living his best life and if he was a straight woman you wouldn’t have batted an eye.”
