Dick Goddard Wiki – Biography

Dick Goddard was an American television meteorologist, author, cartoonist, and animal activist. For over five decades, he served as the evening meteorologist at WJW-TV, the Fox Broadcasting Company-affiliated television station in Cleveland, Ohio. He holds the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a weather forecaster after passing Canadian meteorologist Peter Coade.

After graduating from Kent State in 1960, he joined the weather team at Westinghouse Broadcasting-owned KYW-TV (now WKYC-TV) in Cleveland a year later; while at KYW-TV, Goddard worked alongside sports anchor Jim Graner. Goddard was one of several employees of KYW-TV who agreed to move to WRCV-TV in Philadelphia in June 1965, after Westinghouse was allowed by the FCC to reverse a station trade with NBC in 1956 based on coercion in order for Westinghouse to retain their NBC affiliations; the KYW calls also moved back to Philadelphia. However, Goddard did not take a liking to Philadelphia and returned to Cleveland several months later. In 1966, Goddard became the chief meteorologist at WJW-TV, where he would work for the remainder of his career.

After returning to Cleveland, Goddard also was employed with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns as the team’s official statistician for home games. Then a CBS affiliate, WJW carried Browns games at the time as part of their NFL play-by-play contract until the 1970 AFL-NFL merger (due to the Browns move to the AFC), at which point the games moved to WKYC – this was a key factor in his having joined the station. He held this position from 1966 to 2011, with the exception of a three-year period from 1996–1999 when the franchise was suspended as the old Browns franchise moved to Baltimore, and Cleveland was given a new team.

From August 1977 to January 1979, Goddard also hosted WJW’s version of Bowling for Dollars, a syndicated franchised game show. He has also appeared in numerous skits on WJW’s popular Big Chuck and Lil’ John Show over the years and does occasional stage work.

In December 2014, at age 83, Goddard signed a “multi-year” contract renewal with WJW. On May 18, 2016, Goddard announced that he would retire from his weather duties in November 2016, while continuing his animal advocacy and remaining host of the Woollybear Festival. He delivered his last forecast on the station on November 22, 2016, with the station’s weather center renamed for him. He continued to tape animal advocacy and adoption segments for WJW.

He then attended Kent State University, where he majored in drama and broadcasting. While there he had notable success as the lead character, Curly, in the school’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!

Cause of Death

FOX 8 meteorologist Dick Goddard, a man with a warm smile, a fierce intellect, and always a place in his big heart for any animal in need, lived much of his life as a legend in his hometown – yet never forgot his humble beginnings.

Dick’s daughter, Kim, told FOX 8 News her father passed away Tuesday morning. He was 89 years old.

“I’ve been so lucky,” he said, during a wide-ranging interview in 2015, “and people have been so good to me.”

An only child, Dick was the center of attention for his parents – Vachel Goddard, a railroad mechanic from southern Ohio, and the former Doris Dickerhoof. Neither of his parents had finished grade school, but Dick cherished them and learned a lot from them – including a passionate, lifelong love of animals.

“Any animal that showed up on our farm there near Greenberg, I said, ‘Mom, can we keep it?’ and usually it was yes, but the cow I had to give back.”

Fox 8 General Manager Paul Perozeni released the following statement:

It is with great sadness that I share the news that our beloved friend Dick Goddard has passed away. There is no way to measure his contributions to our television station or our community.

Like most of Northeast Ohio, I grew up watching Dick and still have the picture I took with him when I was eight years old. Simply put, WJW-TV is the house that Dick Goddard built. For more than half a century he was Cleveland’s weatherman. His primary job as the longest-running meteorologist on any local television station in history is now etched in the Guinness Book of World Records.

But Dick’s greatest legacy lies beyond our building here on Dick Goddard Way. His tireless work advocating for animals throughout our community, state, and country, is what Dick would want to be remembered for more than anything else. His love of animals and love of our viewers was never more on display than at the yearly Woollybear Festival.

Our deepest condolences go out to his daughter Kim who has been such an amazing caretaker these past few years.

Over the next few days, there will be many tributes and memories shared. We will continue to honor his memory and carry his legacy, and we will never forget him.
