Derrick Lara, the singer and drummer with The Tamlins, has died at the age of 61. Lara had been battling lung cancer for some time. Lara is survived by his three children and three grandchildren.

Lara was a native of Kingston and was living in the Saint Andrew parish at the time of his sad passing. On that page, Lara’s family said that they were dismayed that the news of the legendary singer’s death had been released prior to an official statement from the family.

Career
Lara, 61, joined the harmony trio in 1983 after being drummer/singer with the Seventh Extension Band for several years. One of his bandmates was Tony Moore, brother of Junior Moore, his colleague in The Tamlins.
He joined The Tamlins after the departure of original member Winston Morgan. Lara was recruited during a fruitful period for the harmony group which had cut several big songs for producers Sly and Robbie including Baltimore, which went number one in 1979.
The dreadlocked Lara sang lead on some of their popular songs such as Go Away Dream and Peek A Boo and was featured on their album, I’ll Be Waiting. He also toured with The Tamlins as opening act and backup singers for Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Leroy Sibbles and Beres Hammond.

Death Cause
Lara had announced in December 2019 that he was battling lung cancer. In order to pay for his treatment, Lara’s family had started a Facebook fundraising page. The Jamaica Gleaner reports that Lara passed away in his daughter’s home in Miami, Florida, around 5:00 a.m. on February 13.
