David Jones Wiki – David Jones Biography
David Jones, a Boston University professor, was found dead on the ground near the JFK / UMass MBTA station on Sept. 11, police confirmed. Jones reportedly fell from a hole in a rusty flight of stairs at the station that was closed for more than 20 months. It is unclear how he was able to access the stairs, given that they were cordoned off. His death has left a great void, with messages of condolence from professors and students at the university.
The 40-year-old father of three was an associate professor at the University of California School of Public Health. Originally from New York City, Jones started out as a pretzel vendor at Yankee Stadium. From there, he managed to obtain internships in the Idaho Legislature, the Canadian House of Commons, and Congressman Charlie Rangel’s district office in New York. He then went on to get a B.A. from McGill University, an MSPH from the University of North Carolina, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.
Jones, a public health policy expert, joined BU in 2014 and was named the founding editor-in-chief of the Public Health Post just one year later. He has published numerous papers on health policy and even a book entitled ‘Exchange Policy: Opposing Obamacare in the Battleground States. At the time of his death, he was working on another book on the social determinants of health in the Mississippi Delta, the university said in a news release.
Described as a “wonderful human being,” Jones also received numerous awards from both BU and outside. Jones’ wife Sarah recently overcame her battle with cancer after surgery. She leaves behind three daughters and numerous devastated students and colleagues. “I have no words to describe the devastation of this news,” the dean of BU’s School of Public Health (SPH) Sandro Galea wrote in an email.

How did David Jones die?
A Boston University Milton professor died over the weekend when his family says he fell down a rusty flight of stairs while jogging in Dorchester. David Jones’s wife wrote in a Facebook post that she was out for a run when she “accidentally accessed a flight of stairs” near the JFK / UMass Boston MBTA stop.
The stairs were rusted and Jones fell about 20 feet to the ground. Police said the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The body of the 40-year-old man was found under the stairs by a passerby who called the police. Massachusetts State Police said the stairs had been deemed unsafe and had been closed for about 20 months. A jersey barrier and chain-link fence blocked the upper entrance to Columbia Road.
“How can you not see such a big hole going up or down the stairs? I don’t know, it’s sad, ”said Richard Saunders, who lives near the dilapidated staircase where it happened. He said crews added more fencing to the sides and midsection of the staircase and added “danger” signs at the lower entrance after the fatal fall. Teams returned Monday night adding a taller fence at the top entrance.
The MBTA said the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is in charge of maintaining the stairs. When WBZ asked a DCR spokesperson if the stairs were scheduled for repair, they did not respond.
“The conditions speak for themselves. I mean, they’re basically disintegrating under us, ”said Genesia Eddins, who runs the ladder a lot. “I would like to think that it would receive immediate attention so that it does not happen again. Boston University is planning a memorial service for Jones sometime next week.
“I was so excited to be back in class, to be back with the students,” said Dean of the Boston University School of Public Health, Sandro Galea. “David was a truly wonderful human being … a kind, generous and thoughtful scholar, mentor and teacher.” The school is planning a memorial gathering for students, colleagues, and families next week.
Kate Conquest is a former student and teaching assistant to Jones. “I feel like he’s what you expect your graduate school professors to be, and what some of them are,” Conquest said. “He made time for everyone and believed in us.” Governor Charlie Baker, in a news conference Monday, called Jones’ death “a terrible tragedy.”
“There is an ongoing investigation at this time and I want to let that investigation proceed before we comment further on it,” Baker said. “Obviously I feel very bad for him, for his family, and for all his classmates and students.”
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is investigating Jones’ death.
“We continue to see how Dr. Jones accessed a staircase that had been closed for about 20 months,” said DA Rachael Rollins. “Whether accidental or intentional, any death is a tragedy and the harm to loved ones is the same. While the investigation is ongoing, we are available to offer support to his family and connect them to community resources through our victim and witness assistance program. ”
