Cause of Death

Even after finding a home and success at A&M as a pass-first point guard, Edwards always had a special fire.

Past slights fueled his college career that began at Georgetown and continued at College Station.

“Maybe it’s the demeanor I carry,” Edwards told The New York Times during his senior season in 1993-94. “I’m cocky. I don’t back down. That’s the way I was brought up. I come from a strong family. People talked about my height, my SAT scores. They thought I was dealing drugs because I was living in the projects.

“It’s funny, the people that doubted me, I don’t hear anything like that anymore.”

Edwards died of the coronavirus in his native New York City, A&M confirmed Monday night. New York has been one of the hardest-hit American cities by the outbreak.

“Never in a million years would I have even imagined my backcourt teammate would go before his time,” former A&M teammate Chuck Henderson posted on Facebook. “I just got the news that Dave Edwards passed away. For those that have been praying for him, he is now in a better place.

“This coronavirus has hit me in the heart. Dave was one of the fiercest competitors and best point guards that I’ve ever met. Nearly unstoppable. Learned how to become tough as nails competing against him every day and shaking off adversity. Will also remember the 4 years we were together after you transferred from Georgetown to Texas A&M. RIP Dave Boogie!!!!”

The 5-9 Edwards played three seasons at A&M. As a senior in 1993-94, he averaged 13.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 8.8 assists, ranking second nationally in the final category to future Maverick Jason Kidd. Edwards’ 265 assists that season are still an A&M record. Under the late Tony Barone, the Aggies finished 19-11 that season and reached the NIT.

Tulsa coach Frank Haith, a former A&M assistant, noted that the pandemic had hit close to home.

“This situation is very real and impacts so many that we love,” Haith tweeted. “Continue to do your part as we fight this awful pandemic. We will beat this, but we need everyone’s help. RIP David.

Tributes and remembrances quickly poured in.

“David was one of the fiercest competitors I was ever around,” said Kevin Hurley, A&M’s director of basketball operations from 1992-2002. “He was an even better person off the court. He taught me a ton about competing in everything you do in life. He will be missed.”

Edwards was even competitive with other Aggies.

“Dave and I used to compete for who would have the most assists each game between him and I,” former women’s basketball standout Lisa Branch said. “He taught me how to compete in everything, not just in basketball. He called me Half Pint because of my height; and I called him Half Pint because he wasn’t much taller than me.”
