Cynthia Weil Wiki – Cynthia Weil Biography
Cynthia Weil (October 18, 1940 – June 1, 2023) was an American songwriter who wrote many songs together with her husband Barry Mann. Weil and Mann were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
Weil was born in New York City and raised in a conservative Jewish family. Her father was Morris Weil, a furniture store owner and the son of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants, and her mother was Dorothy Mendez, who grew up in a Sephardic Jewish family in Brooklyn. Weil trained as an actress and dancer, but she soon demonstrated a knack for songwriting that led her to collaborate with Barry Mann, whom she married in August 1961. The couple have a daughter, Jenn Mann. Weil became one of the Brill Building songwriters of the 1960s and one of the most important writers during the rise of rock and roll.
She and her husband created songs for many contemporary artists and earned several Grammy Awards and Academy Award nominations for their film scores. As his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame biography put it, in part: “Mann and Weil’s … [plays veered from] epic ballads (“On Broadway,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'”) to absolute rockers. (‘Kicks’, ‘We Gotta Get Out of This Place) [and also] placed an emphasis on meaningful lyrics in their compositions. With Weil writing the lyrics and Mann the music, they created a series of songs that addressed themes as serious as the racial and economic divisions ‘Uptown’, …and the difficult reality of making it big in the big city (‘On Broadway’).’Only in America’…addressed segregation and racism, making it too controversial for the Drifters, who were the intended performers. ‘We’ve Got to Get Out of This Place’ became an anthem for [the] Vietnam soldier, anti-war protesters, and young people who saw it as an anthem of greater opportunity.”
In 1987, she and her husband, Mann, were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2004, she opened in New York They Wrote That? by Mann and Weil, a musical revue based on her songs. In it, Mann sang and Weil related stories about the songs and her personal history.
