An instructor at Virginia Tech has caused quite a stir on social media after allegedly apologizing to her students of color for having white skin and being a heterosexual cis-gender woman. Duncan Lane’s curriculum for her Human Development 1134 class reportedly includes a “Who Am I” section, in which she writes: “I am a cisgender Caucasian female and first-generation Appalachian college student of Scottish descent. British and Norwegian. I am married to a cisgender man and we are middle class. While I did not ‘ask’ for the many privileges in my life, I have benefited from them and will continue to benefit from them whether I like it or not. ”

The educator said it was her duty as a woman who enjoys white privilege to confront racism head on and fight for equal rights. She also apologized to students of color for the “inexcusable horrors within our shared history,” adding that having white skin was an unfair privilege and more of an “injustice.”
“This is an injustice,” she continued. “I am and will continue to work daily to be anti-racist and confront the innate racism within me that is the reality and history of whites. I want to be better: every day. I will transform myself: every day. This job terrifies me: everyone days. I invite my white students to join me on this journey. And my students of color: I apologize for the inexcusable horrors within our shared history. ”
One student told Campus Reform that the class is “about disabilities.” “No political opinion, affiliation or judgment of any kind,” added the student. “If you are talking about disabilities, stay on course.”
“It hurts me when someone says I was born with ‘innate racism’ because of the color of my skin,” another student told the outlet. “It makes me feel like I should hide and worry about everything I say.” Duncan Lane’s apology sparked a huge reaction on social media. Many accused her of indoctrinating students and called for her to be fired.
“OMG. I should apologize for putting up with her as a teacher,” wrote one Twitter user. “@virginia_tech Get rid of awake teachers like Crystal Duncan Lane! Apologizing for being white! BS. Enough is enough. Stop the indoctrination of our Virginia students!” another fumed.

“This is a perfect example of what sparked all this and CRT and all this crap of how white people are born racist, which is absolutely untrue and this teacher shouldn’t be near a classroom if that’s what she’s teaching. “he added. one opined. “Is there something in the nation’s food or water supply? So many crazy people! Is it brain damage?” another added.
