The brave woman was thrown onto an “isolated” canal towpath before the man attempted to assault her, but she fought him off.
Fairclough then left her na**ked from the waist down, and police found her in a “distressed” state at 4 am. Now, Fairclough has been incarcerated for eight years at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. Prosecutor Nick Tatlow said the defendant and his victim went for some monkey dust at 2:47 a.m. on Nov. 19. The couple then headed to Cromer Road and the canal road. Tatlow said: “The defendant indicated that he was going there for a pipe of monkey dust. She followed him.
“He grabbed her, put his hands around her mouth and threw her to the ground. He told her that if she yelled things would get worse for her. He tried to push her through a bush. He pushed her. She fell to the ground. He pulled a coat over her head. He took off her pants, trainers, and socks and began to turn her around.
“He dragged her away, bruising her arm. She decided it was safer to cooperate. She tried to fight him at first.” The court heard that the defendant attempted to assault his victim with penetration. He pulled her blouse up and touched her breasts. Tatlow said, “He gave up, stopped and told him they were going to get into Hanley. He said, ‘Tell anyone and I’ll kill you.’
The victim was seen by the police walking through the streets at 4 in the morning in great distress. The officers recovered his pants, sneakers and socks from the scene of the attack. The court heard that the woman was left with abrasions on her legs, feet and buttocks and bruises on her arm. In a statement from the victim, she was degraded and humiliated and now feels like a ‘broken shell’.
She said that every day since the attack has been traumatic and that she has severe nightmares and memories.
Charged – Arrested
Speaking about the 12-year-old girl’s theft, Mr. Tatlow said: “The girl was on her way to school on a bike path on Riverdale Drive, Chell. She was wearing dark clothing and a mask. She deliberately gave him a wide margin. He turned and followed her. He approached her from behind. When she tried to pull away, he grabbed her and pulled her to the ground. He grabbed her arm. She struggled to escape.
“She pulled away. She let go. She was able to flee back to her house. She told her father that she had been attacked. The defendant had run away and ditched his jacket, but left his phone on it, which is how they tracked him down. He was arrested and interviewed on October 9, where he admitted to trying to pick up the girl’s phone.
Fairclough said he was desperate to talk to his children and had no credit on his phone. He said he threw his clothes because he didn’t want to be caught. He added that he had taken monkey powder in the early hours of the morning. Fairclough, of Downey Street, Hanley, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery, attempted assault by penetration, and causing another person to engage in sexual activity without consent.

Mitigating Daniel Lister said: “His offense was compounded and caused by an addiction to monkey dust that he was under in October and November of last year.” He said the attempted robbery was a “terrifying attack on a young child.”
He added that the defendant suffers from anxiety, depression, and stress. Judge Paul Glenn said: “You tried to rob a 12-year-old girl on the way to school. At the time you were out on bail for an assault on your grandmother.
You had the presence of mind to ditch your outerwear, but you left the phone in your pocket and that led to your arrest.”
Incident – Investigation
The judge said the sexual crimes against the woman on the towpath occurred in an “isolated location.” He said: “He covered her mouth and threatened consequences if she screamed. He pushed her through a hedge, threw her to the ground, shoved her, took off her bottom clothing.
“She had been resisting, but in that moment, she submitted. He thought that by doing so, ‘I could get out of this alive.’ You put your hand between her legs. In the end, you gave up, but you threatened to kill her if she told anyone.” Fairclough was listed on the Sex Offender Registry for Life and prohibited from participating in a variety of activities involving children and vulnerable adults.
Investigating Officer Janine Shropshire of the Staffordshire Police Felony Rape and Sex Crimes Unit praised the victim for her bravery. She said: “The woman was wearing nothing more than a coat when the police found her shortly after 4 in the morning. Fairclough’s attack was violent and the victim received several blows to the face while conducting this assault.
“We commend the courage of the victim in seeking immediate help to get the attention of a police officer passing through the attack. This allowed us to arrest Fairclough at the earliest opportunity and allowed us to take him to court.”
