A 23-year-old former varsity basketball player turned banker and finance graduate who live-streamed the horrible attack has been named as the suspect in a Monday morning shooting at a bank in Louisville. The suspect, Connor Sturgeon, who works at the Old National Bank branch in downtown Louisville, was named by Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel, chief of the Louisville Police Department.
In the Old National Bank Building, which contains the bank and a number of other companies, Sturgeon opened fire with a rifle at around 8:38 in the morning, killing four people and injuring nine others, including three police officers, according to Gwinn-Villaroel. Sturgeon was live-streaming the incident. She said that Sturgeon was murdered after exchanging gunfire with police, although it’s not clear if he died as a result of police shootings or self-inflicted wounds.
Senior vice president Tommy Elliott, 63, market executive Jim Tutt, 64, senior vice president of commercial real estate Josh Barrick, 40, and commercial banking agent Juliana Farmer, 57, were all slain at the workplace of Old National Bank. After being shot in the head, Officer Nicholas Wilt, 26, who had just received his diploma from the police school on March 31, was in critical but stable condition, according to Gwinn-Villaroel.

Since Sturgeon had sustained so many concussions, he always wore a helmet during basketball games, according to him. He stated, “My self-esteem has been a problem for me for a long time.” “I struggled to some degree to fit in as a late bloomer in middle and high school, and this has given me a somewhat poor self-image that lingers now. I’ve never been very good at making friends, so I’ve had more practice being by myself than others. It is simple to feel like I am not performing as well as I should be since college has brought along a completely new environment and new obstacles. But this semester, I believe that my social skills have improved and I have started to develop. I have found that taking time out to take stock of how I feel and what I can do to feel better has helped me be more social and in turn feel better about myself.”
In another portion, he noted that he had previously been able to earn decent scores without doing much studying, but that now it was much more difficult to do so since his subjects were getting harder. I still struggle with myself, but I think I’ve made progress and can keep going.
As a 6’5” junior on Floyd Central’s basketball team, Sturgeon appears to have had two now-defunct Twitter accounts. These accounts had tagged images of Sturgeon on the basketball court and the athletics track. More recently, he and two friends co-hosted a podcast about basketball and tweeted about the NBA in between tweets supporting the 2020 Black Lives Matter demonstrations and denouncing police brutality and then-President Donald Trump.
Local news station WAVE3 claimed that Sturgeon was let go from Old National Bank last week, citing sources.
According to Sturgeon’s LinkedIn, he had positions at Old National Bank as a portfolio banker and syndications associate after completing three summer internships between 2018 and 2020. He listed his credentials on his profile: “I possess a Master’s in Finance from the University of Alabama, am certified in the RMA Lending Decision Process, and am on the Young Professionals board for Junior Achievement of Kentuckiana.
His father, Todd Sturgeon, who served as Floyd Central’s head basketball coach until last year and formerly guided the University of Indianapolis’ men’s basketball team for 10 seasons, once referred to Sturgeon as a “finance major and an NBA hoop-head” online. After observing Connor at a basketball camp, Coach Sturgeon reportedly decided to leave the university in 2007 because “maybe he’d rather have more time to spend with his own sons than other people’s.” A professional model is Sturgeon’s brother.
