Police say the driver left the scene but later surrendered. Investigators said Treu admitted to inhaling chemical vapors, also known as huffing, before the crash.

Each felony charge against Treu carries a 40-year maximum sentence, all of which could potentially be served consecutively.

Sentencing begins Tuesday, March 10. Approximately 28 people affected by the crash are expected to give victim impact statements.

“I saw what Colten Treu did. I never saw brake lights. What I heard was acceleration. Acceleration through body by body,” said Autumn Helgeson’s mother. “My child’s life was sacrificed for an air-duster high that he couldn’t wait seven minutes for.”
