Famous Hong Kong singer-songwriter Coco Lee committed suicide on Wednesday. Her sisters confirmed her death on social media. Born in Hong Kong, Lee moved to the US as a child and released albums in Mandarin and English.

She also provided the voice of the title character in the Mandarin version of Disney’s hit film Mulan, and performed a song from the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon soundtrack at the 2001 Oscars. Her sisters said she had been in a coma since a suicide attempt over the weekend.

Lee’s sisters, Carol and Nancy, revealed in a Facebook post that Coco had attempted suicide at her home on Sunday. Coco had been diagnosed with depression a few years ago. The 48-year-old woman slipped into a coma and eventually passed away after attempting to take her own life.

Her family expressed their gratitude to the healthcare staff and fans for her support.

Who was Coco Lee?

Coco Lee was born on January 17, 1975. She was a Chinese-American singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actress.

She was nine years old when she, her mother, and her sisters moved to San Francisco. She attended Presidio High School and Raoul Wallenberg Traditional High School. After graduating from high school, she was offered a recording contract in Hong Kong. Initially, she tried to juggle her budding music career with her studies at the University of California, Irvine. However, she left after her first year to pursue her pop career full-time.

She was the first runner-up at the 12th Annual New Talent Singing Awards in Hong Kong after singing Whitney Houston’s Run To You. The next day, she was offered a recording contract with Capital Artists. She made her debut by appearing on several compilation albums, including Red Hot Hits ’93 Autumn Edition. In 1994, she released her first Mandarin solo albums, Love from Now On and Promise Me, working with Fancy Pie Records.

Her single, Do You Want My Love entered the US music charts. Her first English album of hers was Just No Other Way (1999). She even performed at the Oscars, after her song A Love Before Time was nominated for Best Original Song from the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Apart from these, Walt Disney Pictures hired her to sing the theme song Reflection and to be the voice of the heroine Fa Mulan in the Mandarin version of Mulan. She also performed at Michael Jackson’s “Michael Jackson and Friends” benefit concert.

Coco married Bruce Rockowitz on October 27, 2011, in a lavish Jewish wedding ceremony in Hong Kong. He is a Canadian-Jewish businessman and former CEO of Li & Fung. In 2016, she revealed that she has two adult stepdaughters from her husband’s previous marriage.
