Coach Arlisha Boykins Wiki, Biography
Arlisha Boykins, a 22-year-old assistant coach, was fired from her job after impersonating a 13-year-old absentee player at a basketball game in Portsmouth on January 21, 2023. Boykins coached the junior varsity women’s basketball team at Churchland High School.
The 13-year-old student, who posed as the coach, was out of town at the time for a club basketball game in a different league and was unaware of the incident until it occurred. After word got out, the player’s family demanded an apology from the school. The family also informed school authorities of their plans to transfer their son to another school.
The internet was stunned and amused when the news broke, with some taking to social media to share their thoughts on the matter. Reflecting on the issue, one user said:
“lol wow i should be ashamed”
After the incident occurred and Boykins’ identity was revealed, the school decided to sit out another game for the remainder of the season. Both the Truckers’ varsity head coach and the school’s junior varsity head coach were fired. The varsity head coach reportedly encouraged the act of impersonating Boykins.
The Portsmouth School District has called for an investigation into the matter.
Netizens are asking about Arlisha Boykins’ in-game stat line
Viral footage of the basketball game surfaced after the news broke, where the coach could be seen wearing a number 1 jersey in black, which belonged to the teenage student-athlete who was absent from the game. Said game was against the Nansemond River JV team and took place in Suffolk.
Arlisha Boykins faced off against teenage players ages 14-15. She blocked a shot and dove to the basket to complete a layup and was also seen shooting free throws and interacting with the team. At one point, Arlisha Boykins ran past the stands for a fumble foul.
The assistant coach even high-fived another team member in a celebratory gesture after making a layup against an opposing team made up of players almost ten years her junior.
People on Twitter were amused by the news, with some people sarcastically saying that maybe Boykins identifies as a 13-year-old.
Many mentioned that the students and other coaches must have been involved in this as well since they played along with the Boykins act. Some were also curious about Boykins’ stat line from the game.
These are some of the other reactions from netizens:
Boykins had been working at the school for less than a year.
The student’s father, who posed as Arlisha Boykins, said:
“Coaches always preach to kids about integrity and that kind of thing, so I was surprised. I just need an apology, you know, because I haven’t gotten one from the program supervisor yet.”
A Portsmouth Public School spokesperson said the Churchland High School administration immediately requested an investigation into the matter and contacted the Virginia High School League to file a report on the investigation’s findings.
Apart from that, the administration also held a meeting with the players and their parents, where both the varsity and junior varsity players expressed that they want to give up more games this season.
Churchland High reportedly won the game against Nansemond River with the final score being 47-45. However, his win was later listed as a forfeit loss. Arlisha Boykins began working on the school’s junior varsity team on August 29, 2022. Her last day of work was January 25, 2023.
