Early Life

Pérez spent his formative years in San Antonio, Texas and was one of two children of Carmen Medina and Gilbert Pérez. Being interested in music from an early age, Chris learned to play French horn in middle school, and would often perform at concerts. Reportedly, his mother supported this decision, but had problems when it came to him choosing to play guitar because of the stereotypes associated with the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. He looked up to musicians such as Def Leppard, Kiss, the Scorpions, Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden, and in the 1990s stated that he enjoyed Ricky Martin’s music.

In 1990, he was featured on “Ven Conmigo”, the second studio album recorded by Selena, which also featured her brother A.B. Quintanilla, who worked as the principal record producer and songwriter.
