Christ Needs was a Welsh radio broadcaster, best known as a regular evening and daytime presenter on BBC Radio Wales. Born in Cwmafan near Port Talbot, he was educated at local schools. During his teenage years, he was sexually abused by someone whom he refused to identify and consequently tried to commit suicide.
Needs was an accomplished pianist who had accompanied Bonnie Tyler and appeared on S4C programs such as Noson Lawen. His other jobs included: language translator, actor, tour guide, and all-round vocal/piano entertainer, and through his work, he has lived in Spain, Gibraltar, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Jersey. He spoke English, Welsh, Spanish and Dutch and was learning German.
He started his radio career with the Touch AM radio station before co-presenting the mid-morning magazine show Live Time on Radio Wales while also appearing on S4C television. From 2002 he had his own show, The Friendly Garden Programme, broadcast every weeknight. In the period up to 2003, Needs was joined nightly on his radio show by his friend Nikki-Sue, a show singer and Tina Turner impersonator.
Most of the people who called into his show belonged to an organization called The Chris Needs Friendly Garden Association. The Garden as it became known, claimed almost 50,000 members, mainly from Wales but also from as far away as Queensland, Australia. Members of the Garden were given their own identification code, usually starting with an M for male members, A for Animals, or without a letter for Female members.

Cause of Death
Chris Needs to die on 26 July 2020, at the age of 68, after battling a short illness. Chris Needs’ cause of death was a heart condition, according to BBC Wales. BBC Radio Wales confirmed his death in a statement: “It is with enormous sadness and regrets that we confirm the death of Chris Needs MBE following a short period of ill health. Through his Friendly Garden, Chris brought pleasure and comfort to thousands of listeners, from all over the world, who treated him like a true friend. The thoughts of everyone at BBC Radio Wales are with Chris’s husband Gabe [Chris Needs partner], his family, and his many friends at this time.”

Radio Wales’s editor Colin Paterson said in a statement: “His contribution to Radio Wales can’t be underestimated, not least in recent months when he has provided comfort and companionship to our listeners. And for almost 20 years, the Friendly Garden has brought people together from across Wales and the world, from every walk of life. The ability to bring people together was one of his many strengths and I know the Garden team, along with all of us at Radio Wales will miss him. But our thoughts today are with Chris’s husband Gabe, his family, and his friends at this incredibly sad time.”
Radio 1 DJ Greg James paid tribute to Needs on Twitter. He tweeted: “Such sad news. Sending all our love from Radio 1. Loved featuring Chris on my show over the years. And it was an honor to have been welcomed into the Friendly Garden. “What goes up a drainpipe down but…no hang on…what goes down a drainpipe up…oh, I dunno!”
Rhydian Roberts tweeted: “My best friend in broadcasting Chris Needs has passed away.I spoke to him last week to see how he was doing after his heart attack and he told me he was frightened. That broke my heart. I’m in bits that I never got to see him just one more time alive. He was my everything.”
