Mutten was last seen on the evening of January 13, but her disappearance was not reported to specialists until the next day. Crisis personnel conducted a five-day search but were unable to locate her.
On January 14, around 4:30 a.m., neighbors revealed they had seen a vehicle without headlights pull out of the hotel. Stein was imprisoned and charged with murder at his home in Surry Hills. Using GPS and CCTV data, his vehicle was tracked long-term near Colo River.
