Music has always been a huge part of Carter’s life and family. According to Newsday, Carter’s older brother, Jack, and his father, David, both play the drums. Meanwhile, his mother’s father, Ric Mango, was an unofficial member of the 1960s group Jay and the Americans (singers of “This Magic Moment” and “Cara Mia”) and also led the Ric Mango Orchestra.

“I think I got the singing gene from him,” Rubin said during one of his video packages on The Voice.

Carter’s family operates a non-profit called Families in Arms, which was established in honor of Carter’s brother, Jack, who was diagnosed with autism at age two. Per the organization’s website, the charity’s mission is “to give families of children with autism the opportunity to create memories that go far beyond the walls of therapy.”

Together, both Jack and Carter perform for the charity, according to NBC. The network also reports that Carter gets a lot of his vocal practice from participating in school musicals and various community events.

After listening to Carter’s moving rendition of “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppets last Monday night, the No Doubt lead singer burst into tears. “That was flawless. That was God answering my prayers,” she gushed. “I am so honored that you picked me [to be your coach], and I’m crying, and I’m so happy. I love this frickin’ show!”

Now, Carter has landed in the season 19 finale. But before making it far in this year’s competition, Carter was just a normal teenager who had big dreams of becoming a performer.

Despite his charitable efforts, Carter revealed before his Voice knockout performance of “You Say” by Lauren Daigle that he had experienced a lot of bullying because of the sound of his voice.

“Being a 14-year-old boy in middle school-slash-high school that sings, not very athletic … most boys my age, their voices have already dropped down,” Carter said, according to TalentRecap.com. “So I have been picked on by other kids for being this different, unique individual.”

Thankfully though, Carter has been able to shake off the haters and learn something important about himself in the process. “As I get older, I realize being unique isn’t a bad thing.”
