A man who killed his girlfriend in a “brutal and senseless” attack should serve at least 25 years in prison.Carl Silcox, 45, of Commercial Street, Aberbargoed, Co. Caerphilly, claimed to have found 43-year-old Adell Cowan dead next to him when he woke up.But in October 2020, he attacked her with a wooden broomstick, injuring her face and head, and causing “serious internal injuries.”He will serve at least 25 years until she is eligible for her release.Silcox called 999 shortly after midnight on October 18, 2020 to tell police that Ms Cowan had died.When emergency crews arrived, they realized she had been dead for a few hours, and officers found bloody clothing and sheets at the scene.At the hearing, Silcox was heard telling the operator:

The only person he could call a friend was the person he killed,” John Benson KC said in the defense.
Judge Tracy Lloyd Clarke told Silcox: “For reasons unknown, he has repeatedly and severely assaulted Ms Cowan, including using a broomstick as a weapon.Your behavior was cruel and callous, and you have caused great pain to those who knew and loved Adell Cowan.”Cowan’s nephew, Starr Richards, said in a victim impact statement that the time since his death has been “hell for our family.”We are waiting for answers and justice. While we have had some results, we are still unclear as to why Adell was taken from us,” he added.
