Flint’s Briana Sykes killed in police-involved shooting
Michigan State Police released the name of the 19-year-old woman who was fatally shot during a shooting involving police Saturday in Flint. A news release from the agency claims the officer was working at a traffic point during the Flint 19th Parade when the woman, Briana Sykes, shot the officer. The officer then returned fire, according to the statement.
Sykes was taken to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. The officer was not injured, but video images taken by passersby circulating on social media show the officer falling to the ground after firing his weapon.
Flint police asked the state police to take over the investigation. MSP’s Lt. Kim Vetter told the Detroit Free Press that the officer, whose name has not been released, is currently on paid leave.

Two videos circulating on social media show parts of the incident, and Vetter said MSP has seen these videos. She noted that the officer was not wearing a body camera at the time of the incident and does not know if there is dashcam footage of nearby police vehicles.
“The evidence indicates that she shot first,” Vetter said. “The viewer videos, we have them and we are using them as part of our research. And there are other surveillance videos in the area … that’s a typical investigative protocol that they would be reviewing any other video that was available on that incident. ”
Vetter said these investigations take time and MSP will release more information as it becomes available.
