Brandon Soules was arrested last week after being convicted of lying to law enforcement officials, Coolidge police in Arizona said in a statement outlining a plan they believe could be excused from Soules’ work at a tire store.

Arizona authorities accused a man of making excessive efforts to get off work this month and said he had mimicked his own kidnapping, tied his wrists, gagged, and made up a story of hidden treasure in the desert.

In the statement, the police said that during a meeting with detectives, Mr. Soules, 19, admitted to fabricating the story of the kidnapping that led to his arrest. He was arrested at the Coolidge Police Department and released prior to the hearing date. Soules did not immediately respond to a message Tuesday and it was unclear if he had an attorney.

Police said the investigation began around 5:25 p.m. On February 10, officers responded to a call about a man injured in an area near the railroad tracks, houses and the city water tower in Coolidge, a city of about 13,000 people 55 miles from Phoenix. The person he called reported that the man was unconscious and unconscious.

According to the police, when the officers arrived, they found a man, later named Mr. Soules, whose hands were “in his mouth” with a belt behind his back and a purple handkerchief. A photo from the Police Department showed the man lying on his side, his hands tied.

Mr. Soules told officers that after completing work that morning, according to the arrest report, two masked men abducted him near his vehicle, hit him on the back of the neck, and threw him at his home.

Police said, according to Mr. Soules, “they took him away in a vehicle before dropping him off in his area.” Mr. Soules was transferred to a hospital where he was evaluated and questioned by the police. According to the agency, he told investigators that his father had been kidnapped in the desert because he had large amounts of money.

Detectives tried for days to investigate his account, which included watching surveillance videos of the area and interviewing the people he mentioned. Hospital records showed that Mr. Soules had no concussions or head injuries, a police report and text messages examined by detectives showed no disclosed messages or phone calls.

Finally, and after encountering problems with Mr. Soules over and over in his account, the detectives came to the conclusion that “her story about him was fabricated and there were no kidnappings or attacks.” They also determined that the hidden treasure account was wrong.

Police said he worked at an auto shop at the tire factory, where Soules put the tires on and traveled through the area to retrieve parts from the shop. The store manager declined to comment on the arrest Tuesday. According to Mr. Soules’ Facebook profile, he no longer works there.
