Surveillance footage from Aug. 22 shows the suspect, identified by the Los Angeles Police Department as Brandon Jerold Smith, 24, of South Los Angeles, walking down the street near 88th and San Pedro with a dog at slopes, according to ABC7. The suspect is briefly out of camera frame, reappearing moments later without the animal when flames erupt nearby.

The dog was taken to a shelter the next day. On August 25, A Purposeful Rescue, an animal rescue group, removed Henessey from the shelter and immediately rushed her to an animal hospital. Several days later she succumbed to her injuries.

“She had burns all over her body,” she told ABC7 Hillary Rosen, founder of APR. “She had swelling all over her body, from her legs to her ears, her neck, her stomach, her whole back had welts.” Smith was arrested Saturday on a felony animal cruelty charge, according to the LAPD. Serena Prentice, Smith’s ex-girlfriend, called the act “honestly disgusting.”
