Brandon Jerold Smith was arrested after allegedly setting his family‘s dog on fire, authorities say. The Log Angeles Times identified the puppy as a Welsh Corgi mix named Hennessy, reporting that the dog was hung from a fence and set on fire during the heinous act.
Surveillance footage from Aug. 22 shows the suspect, identified by the Los Angeles Police Department as Brandon Jerold Smith, 24, of South Los Angeles, walking down the street near 88th and San Pedro with a dog at slopes, according to ABC7. The suspect is briefly out of camera frame, reappearing moments later without the animal when flames erupt nearby.

The dog was taken to a shelter the next day. On August 25, A Purposeful Rescue, an animal rescue group, removed Henessey from the shelter and immediately rushed her to an animal hospital. Several days later she succumbed to her injuries.
“She had burns all over her body,” she told ABC7 Hillary Rosen, founder of APR. “She had swelling all over her body, from her legs to her ears, her neck, her stomach, her whole back had welts.” Smith was arrested Saturday on a felony animal cruelty charge, according to the LAPD. Serena Prentice, Smith’s ex-girlfriend, called the act “honestly disgusting.”
“I was super upset with him, [he was] angry,” said Prentice, who shared images of the 7-year-old dog playing with her son with ABC7. Prentice said that in August, her ex would post himself “setting things on fire” during live broadcasts on Instagram, claiming that her ex uses drugs and is dealing with mental illness. In an interview with NBC4, Prentice said that she had a restraining order against Smith.
“Before this happened, he was threatening me,” she told the outlet. “I called the police station several times. Her sister Stephanie Prentice described the act of animal cruelty as” heartbreaking “and” incredible to watch. ”

Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries during the second round of treatment, six days after the horrific incident.
Smith was arrested on Saturday, September 4, and faces one count of animal cruelty and another of arson. He is reportedly being held on $ 100,000 bail and the motive for the attack has yet to be established.
