Bishop Xavier Novell presented his resignation as bishop of the town of Solsona at the end of August. Father Novell was the youngest prelate in Spain, just 41 years old, when he was appointed in 2010 and was seen as a rising star of the Catholic Church.
His sudden resignation has caused a stir in the institution and his parish, especially after the move was attributed to a love affair with Silvia Caballol, a divorced psychologist. He has self-published novels with very sexual and hidden content.
“I have fallen in love with a woman for the first time in my life and I want to do things the right way,” Father Novell told a friend, according to Religión Digital, a Catholic news site. The couple reportedly live together in Manresa, 50 kilometers from Solsona.
Spanish bishop leaves Catholic Church to be with erotic fiction writer
A Spanish bishop who resigned from the Roman Catholic Church last month left the church to be with an erotic fiction writer, local media report. When Xavier Novell announced he would be stepping down from his role of more than a decade, the church released a statement saying it was for “strictly personal reasons”.
But Spanish media outlet Religion Digital has now revealed the 52-year-old is in a relationship with Silvia Caballol, a divorcee who writes Satanic-themed erotic fiction and is also a trained psychologist. Mr Novell became Spain’s youngest bishop in 2010 when he took up the position in Solsona, in Catalonia’s north-east, at the age of 41.
In that role, he backed conversion therapy for members of the LGBTQ+ community and held traditional values regarding abortion and homosexuality, BBC reports. Seen as a rising star in the Catholic Church, Mr Novell was also an outspoken supporter of Catalonian independence and had met with the pope on several occasions.
His resignation came as a surprise for the church, which has maintained the decision was private, saying “corroboration or not of this story is a strictly personal matter for him alone”. Religion Digital reported Ms. Caballol’s books to include one titled “The Hell of Gabriel’s Lust”.
An introduction for the book says readers are “promised a journey into sadism, madness and lust and a struggle between good and evil, God and Satan, with a plot to shake one’s values and religious beliefs”. Mr. Novell is now reportedly looking for work in the Barcelona area as an agronomist, or farm researcher.
