Bill Leavy, a longtime NFL referee who worked for 20 seasons, allegedly passed away on Wednesday at the age of 76. Senior vice president of officiating for the NFL, Walt Anderson, issued a statement saying, “We are saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Leavy, a longtime NFL referee and a current member of the league’s officiating team.

“Bill was a top-notch representative and an even better person. Bill was an invaluable guide to many new officials throughout his tenure, always courteous and considerate. His winning the Art McNally Award demonstrates his selfless commitment to officiating. At every stage of his football career, his integrity gained him respect, and the whole officiating community laments his passing.”

In 1984, Leavy’s college football officiating career got underway in the Big West Conference. He worked for that conference for 11 seasons and was chosen to referee four bowl games. Following the assaults, Leavy was appointed to oversee the game between the San Francisco 49ers and the St. Louis Rams, and during the coin toss, he wore a hat from the San Francisco Fire Department. He described it at the time as “my great honour” to celebrate first responders on stage because, before beginning his career as a referee, he spent 27 years working as a firefighter and police officer in San Jose.

Leavy was employed at a fire station in San Jose when he received the call from Seeman inviting him to join the NFL officials’ team. Leavy played in 14 postseason games, including four wild-card rounds, nine divisional rounds, and the 2013 AFC championship game, in addition to his two Super Bowl appearances. In the divisional round of the playoffs, Leavy officiated the Denver Broncos vs. Indianapolis Colts game. In May 2015, he made his retirement official, and John Hussey took his position.
