Bharti Shahani Declared brain-dead from injury

A college student who attended Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival last week was pronounced brain dead after succumbing to injuries sustained during the horrific wave of crowds that claimed the lives of eight concert goers.

Bharti Shahani, 22, a senior at Texas A&M University, suffered a brain injury at the concert over the weekend and has been in critical condition ever since. Her family told ABC13 on Tuesday morning, November 9, that she is hooked up to a fan and that they are determining what to do next. MEAWW previously reported how Scott and fellow rapper Drake attended a party after the main event, claiming they had no idea about the stampede.

The 22-year-old attended the concert with her sister Namrata Shahani and her cousin Mohit Bellani, but they got lost during the crowd rush. “Once a person fell, people started falling like dominoes. It was like a sinkhole. People fell on top of each other,” Bellani told ABC13. “There were like layers of bodies on the ground, like two fat people. We were struggling to get to the top and breathe to stay alive.”

The victim was rushed to Houston Methodist Hospital by ambulance while paramedics administered CPR en route. Namrata Shahani and Bellani had lost their mobile phones during the ordeal and were unable to locate Bharti. “Once we let go of her hand, the next time we saw her, we were in the ER,” Namrata lamented.

Bharti and Namrata’s parents went to NRG Park after learning of the tragedy. They subsequently rushed to various hospitals before finally finding Bharti. “We were taken to her room, and she was bleeding and on a ventilator. My wife and I were too shocked. We can’t even stay there,” said her father, Sunny Shahani. The victim is said to have suffered multiple heart attacks. “I think she lost oxygen for 10 minutes one time and seven minutes another,” Bellani explained. “So her brain stem was almost 90 percent inflamed.”

Bharti had been studying electronic systems engineering at TAMU and was looking forward to graduating in the spring. She had already landed a summer internship and was on her way to taking over the family business after graduation, her father said. “Doctors say the chances of survival are nil, that I haven’t even talked to my wife until now. We keep saying we’ll pray,” Sunny said before the heartbreaking news on Tuesday. “I ask all of Houston to pray for her. Perhaps her prayers will work like a miracle for her.” While Bellani added: “I want people to understand what we experience and to make sure that nothing like this happens to anyone again.”

Meanwhile, Bharti’s sister has created a GoFundMe page to cover the mounting medical expenses of the beleaguered family. “Bharti was seriously injured during the Astroworld 2021 festival in Houston, Texas, and is currently in the ICU fighting for her life,” Namrata wrote. “Our family remains by Bharti’s side and is unable to work. We are raising funds to help meet the growing expenses during this exhausting time. Bharti is the light of our lives and we are all praying for his full and speedy recovery,” she added.
