Barbara Moore Wiki – Barbara Moore Biography

Barbara Moore was the first wife of Dick Allen, a seven-time MLB All-Star. During his 15-season MLB career, he appeared primarily as a first baseman, third baseman, and outfielder, most notably for the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox. Allen was an All-Star in seven seasons (1965–1967, 1970, 1972–1974). He won the 1964 National League (NL) Rookie of the Year Award and the 1972 American League (AL) Most Valuable Player Award. He also led the AL in home runs for two seasons (1972, 1974).

In 2014, Allen appeared for the first time as a candidate on the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Golden Era Committee election ballot for possible Hall of Fame consideration in 2015. He and the other candidates all missed getting elected by the committee. Allen was one vote short of the required 12 votes needed for election. The Golden Era Committee met and voted on 10 selected candidates from the 1947–1972 era every three years, until being replaced by the Golden Days Committee, in 2016. The Golden Days Committee is scheduled to vote next in 2021, for induction into the Hall’s Class of 2022. The Phillies retired Allen’s number on September 3, 2020.

Allen’s playing career got off to a turbulent start as he faced racial harassment while playing for the Phillies’ minor league affiliate in Little Rock; residents staged protest parades against Allen, the local team’s first black player. Nevertheless, he led the league in total bases.

Dick Allen Death

Dick Allen, a fearsome hitter who was a seven-time All-Star, the 1964 NL Rookie of the Year, and the 1972 AL MVP, has died. He was 78.

The Philadelphia Phillies, the team Allen started out with, announced his death on Monday.

“The Phillies are heartbroken over the passing today of our dear friend and co-worker, Dick Allen,” the team said.

“Dick will be remembered as not just one of the greatest and most popular players in our franchise’s history, but also as a courageous warrior who had to overcome far too many obstacles to reach the level he did. Dick’s iconic status will resonate for generations of baseball fans to come as one of the all-time greats to play America’s pastime,” the Phillies said.

“Dick was a sensitive Black man who refused to be treated as a second-class citizen,” Schmidt said in a speech. “He played in front of home fans that were products of that racist era [with] racist teammates and different rules for whites and Blacks. Fans threw stuff at him, and thus Dick wore a batting helmet throughout the whole game. They yelled degrading racial slurs. They dumped trash in his front yard at his home. In general, he was tormented, and it came from all directions. And Dick rebelled.”

“My friends, these [negative] labels have kept Dick Allen out of the Hall of Fame,” Schmidt said. “Imagine what Dick could’ve accomplished as a player in another era, on another team, left alone to hone his skills, to be confident, to come to the ballpark every day and just play baseball.”
