Thurston is also an Emmy awardee who has worked for The Onion, directed the Obama White House and composed the New York Times hit How To Be Black. He also received the Social Impact Award at the 2021 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards 2020 for co-creating and facilitating How To Citizen near Baratunde.

Baratunde Thurston, moderator of All About America Outdoors Baratunde Rafiq Thurston was born in Washington; his father died when he was a young person, and his mother kept the family going by acting as the controller of the currency. He also has an older sister.

After completing his education at Sidwell Friends School, he received a degree in mindset from Harvard University in 1999. He began his calling in 1999 as an Associate at The Management Network Group, where he worked for some time before joining Unravel Media as a Contract Producer and Consultant.

He also helped set up Jack and Jill Politics, a shady political blog whose inclusion from the 2008 Democratic National Convention was saved by the Library of Congress. He even acted as the cutting edge chef of The Onion before starting the satire/innovation company Cultivated Wit. According to his biography, Thurston also serves on the magazines of BUILD.org and the Brooklyn Public Library.

According to Brian Williams of MSNBC, the 2019 Brooklyn native’s claims were hailed as “one of the most amazing TED talks ever.” Other honors include a Bill Hicks Award designation for thought-provoking comedy, attention in The Root’s survey of the 100 most important African Americans, and attention in Fast Company’s survey of the 100 most creative people in business.

His unusual ability to integrate topics such as culture, race, governmental issues and innovation to understand the present and future of the country is widely recognized. Thurstone’s perspective and critical work challenged the previous US president to name the latter option as someone to “keep in the loop.”
