The woman killed in the mass shooting in the waiting room of an Atlanta medical center has been identified as Amy St. Pierre, 39, an employee of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. St. Pierre, a public health adviser, died after 24-year-old Deion Patterson allegedly opened fire Wednesday at Northside Hospital Medical Midtown, where her mother had taken him for an appointment.

Three of the victims were in critical condition at nearby Grady Memorial Hospital. Patterson fled the scene on foot and became the subject of a city-wide manhunt that lasted for hours. He was captured around 8:00 p.m. m. “without incident” at a condominium complex in suburban Cobb County.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed relief that Patterson was taken alive so that he can be arraigned. “At this point, we’ve had a successful end to a traumatic day,” Dickens said Wednesday night.

She told the Associated Press that her son, a former Coast Guardsman, had “some mental instability” due to the medications she had received from the Veterans Affairs health system, which had begun taking the Friday. Ella Minyone said she wanted a prescription for Ativan to treat anxiety and depression, but the VA wouldn’t give it to her, citing its addictive quality of it. She claimed that her son would have taken the proper dose of the drug because she “heard me in every way.”
Crying, she continued: ‘Those families, those families. They are suffering because they did not give my son his bloody Ativan. Those families lost loved ones to him because he had a mental breakdown because they didn’t listen to me.’ The Coast Guard has confirmed that Patterson enlisted with them in 2018, before being discharged from active duty in January 2023. It is unclear why he was discharged.
‘Our deepest condolences are with the victims and their families. The Coast Guard Investigative Service is working closely with the Atlanta Police Department and local law enforcement on the investigation,” he said in a statement. “Mr. Patterson entered the Coast Guard in July 2018 and last served as an electrician’s mate 2nd class.”
Patterson has had several run-ins with the law, including in 2017, when he was charged with drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and various other traffic violations. In 2015 he was arrested for possession of marijuana and in 2020 he was again cited for various traffic violations.
