Alvin Ailey was a dance choreographer responsible for the creation of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT).

Born on January 5, 1931 in Rogers, Texas, at the zenith of the Great Depression, he died on December 1, 1989 of an AIDS-related illness at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York.
