On 8th March, 2023, Ali Bilal, also known affectionately as “Zille Shah” by his family, was murdered by police in Lahore while he was being illegally held in custody. He was a political worker for the Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI), and had been attending most demonstrations over the last year.
Over the last month, he came to Zaman Park in Lahore every day, hoping to play a role in protecting his party workers and leaders from state brutality and fascism.
Coming from a working class family, Zille was differently abled intellectually, and in one of his last videos (https://twitter.com/SaithAbdullah99/status/1633556789630312450?s=20), he spoke about how his father would give him 50 rupees everyday which he would use to buy tea and biscuits.
Zille Shah died dreaming of a better Pakistan, and his family’s loss and suffering will be difficult to repair. However, the Pakistani people owe a debt to his family, and we hope to play a small role in ameliorating their suffering through this initiative so they have one less thing to worry about as they come to terms with their loss. We will ensure that the funds are handed to his aging Father either by check or direct bank transfer.
