His mother Carla Scott, 35, and his partner Dirk Howell, 41, are accused of subjecting him to a campaign of ‘sinister’ abuse. At his murder trial at Coventry Crown Court, it was said that the teachers were concerned about Alfie in the months before his death.

Social worker Hayley Waldron, from Worcestershire Children’s Services, said she advised Scott to give Alfie a larger breakfast. On cross-examination, Rachel Brand KC said: “She [Scott] told you that she was the kind of kid who would eat everything in sight.”

Howell was not allowed to have unsupervised contact with Alfie or spend the night in the house. ‘She agreed?’ asked the lawyer. “She did it,” said Miss Waldron. Miss Waldron told the court that during a visit in November 2019, Howell was in the house and they wanted her to take part in a risk assessment.

When Scott went looking for him, Miss Waldron said she heard him say, “I don’t want to talk to the (expletive) social workers.” The social worker said there was then an argument between Scott and Howell about who she would choose between him or Alfie.

After Scott said Alfie, Miss Waldron noted that Howell said it was the end of the relationship. Miss Waldron said that, in March 2020, legal discussions took place over whether to remove Alfie from Scott’s care following concerns. Jurors heard that this was not done because it was decided that the situation was not serious enough.

The jury also heard in the first lockdown the children on the safeguard plans were allowed to go to school but Alfie did not attend. Miss Waldron said Alfie’s severe asthma was the reason Scott didn’t send him. She said: ‘We continued to press him (for him to leave)’.

The court heard Daniel Grindrod, who lived next door to Alfie’s family on Vashon Drive, Droitwich, Worcs., leading a crying child on April 4, 2020. He told the jury that he called 999 at 5: 31 am and also reported hearing “knocks and crashes.” coming from the property.

On the call, he said: “He sounded like a child in distress, a child whimpering, almost pleading.” Grindrod said that he too heard screaming from a male voice coming from the house. The jury heard that PC Shannon Murphy came out to follow up on the call.

In her statement, PC Murphy said Scott answered the door but was confused why the police were there. The officer checked and saw Alfie sleeping in his bed. Howell, of Princip Street, Birmingham, has previously admitted to child cruelty against other children but denies murder, manslaughter, cruelty or causing or allowing Alfie’s death.

Carla Scott denies murder, manslaughter, causing or allowing Alfie’s death, and child cruelty crimes against Alfie and other children.
