Abrar Omeish became a board member in November 2019, at the age of 24. At the time, she was one of Virginia’s youngest elected officials. Omeish is the daughter of Esam Omeish, a surgeon who was born in Libya. Her father was a member of the Virginia Immigration Commission. In 2007, he was ironically forced to resign over the use of the word “Jihad”, when a video showed him condemning Israel’s actions at the time and defending “the way of jihad.”

Her daughter Abrar had always been known for her forward-thinking policies, having advocated for a Black History Month assembly, as well as the recognition for the first time of Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in 2021. Also promoted that the school’s Equity Club curb discriminatory beliefs and ideals.

In her June 7 speech, her daughter Abrar Omeish reminded everyone that the school was her father’s alma mater. Addressing the group of outgoing students, he stated, “We struggle with human greed, racism, extreme versions of individualism and capitalism, white supremacy, growing wealth gaps, disease, the climate crisis, extreme poverty in the middle of luxury and waste right next door, and the list happens. ”

A member of the Fairfax County School Board delivered a fiery keynote address last week warning mostly minority graduating high school students that they are about to enter a capitalist world full of racism. , white supremacy, and “extreme versions of individualism.”

Abrar Omeish, the only Muslim member of the school board, delivered the keynote address before the Justice High School graduation ceremony in Falls Church, Virginia, on June 7.

The president of the student government introduced her and noted that she campaigned for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and that her father, Esam Omeish, was a “leader and board member of the Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center,” the namesake of a mosque attended by two hijackers from September 11 in 2001, and radical imam Anwar Al-Awlaki, and Nidal Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter in 2009.

The beginning of Omeish’s speech, first reported by The Daily Wire, was relatively uncontroversial, as she praised the graduates, switching between Arabic, English and Spanish, for overcoming obstacles, both personal and academic.

“Today we tick a box in your academic career. As a human being, you have developed and grown,” she said.

But her speech quickly took on racial and class overtones, while at one point she acknowledged that the school is on land stolen from the Manahoac people, a Native American tribe.

“You understand that social justice is only political for those who can afford to ignore it,” she told the graduating class. “You understand that ‘neutral’ is another word for an accomplice. And you’ve made the decision to take a stand.” She warned graduates that they are entering a divisive world that she will try to contain them, but implored them not to be discouraged.

“That’s exactly why I’m here to tell you to stand your ground,” she said, “so you don’t lose sight of the award.” She told graduates that her leadership would be desperately needed.

But even though the world is unfair, she said, “your truth, your courage, and your path to uplift those who are not heard, will leave you on the right side of history.” Fox News has reached out to Justice High School with a request for comment on Omeish’s speech.
