Abe Schumer, the father of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, died Wednesday night, the New York senator confirmed. “In many ways, he embodied the older generation,” Schumer said in a statement on social media. “He took everything that was thrown at him no matter how hard it was, did his job, never complained: an amazing husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather. We love him and will miss him.

Schumer, born on Thanksgiving Day in 1950, told reporters earlier this week in Brooklyn that his father was hospitalized on Long Island for a heart procedure. The father and son shared a close relationship and Schumer had planned to spend time with him on Thursday.

“My dad, Abe, is 98 years old. He served our country with pride in the Pacific during WWII. And I am grateful for all that he has done for our country and our family, ”Schumer, 71, tweeted just a few weeks ago on Veterans Day.

Abe served in Burma during World War II and took over a small extermination business from his father when he returned to Brooklyn, a job he hated, to support his wife, Selma. Schumer said that his three children were in congress on the day of their father’s 95th birthday, before Father’s Day. “It gave us the idea that we could follow our dreams supported by his strong, tired shoulders,” he said.
