A 911 caller calmly told police that when she entered her dorm, it looked like “part of the ceiling had fallen onto her floor and desk,” and when she looked over, there was “a hole” through her wall. The student told the operator there was a “knick in her calendar like something was shot through the wall” and hit her calendar, leaving the wall broken apart.

They said, Abbaney Matts was 20 years old and she was the elder sister of Deja Matts, she was not enrolled at A&M-Commerce, officials said. Abbaney Matts’ 2-year-old son was injured in the incident, university police officials said. He has since been treated and released to the care of family members.

Statement of School

The school released the following statement:

Our continued thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of the victims from this week’s tragedy.

According to the University Police Department, the shooting appears to be a targeted, isolated event. This remains an active investigation with multiple law enforcement agencies assisting.

Texas A&M University-Commerce is about 60 miles northeast of Dallas.

Investigations Report

As per the same statement by TAMUC police, there is an active investigation ongoing with the assistance of different law enforcement agencies. However, they believe the shooting to be targeted and isolated.

The TAMUC police department released the 911 call recording, which is now posted on their website. It appears that the call was made when another student discovered a hole in her dorm wall. There is no mention of hearing shots fired.

The statement from police ends by saying they will “continue to provide updates as they become available.”
