Conor Pewarski is the husband of Michelle Wu, is an American lawyer and politician who is a member of the Boston City Council. She is the first Asian American woman to serve on the council. First elected in 2013, Wu has served on the Boston City Council since January 2014. From January 2016 to January 2018, she served as council president, the first woman of color to hold that position. In September 2020, Wu announced her candidacy for the 2021 Boston mayoral election.
Wu is considered a political progressive and protégé of Elizabeth Warren. Warren was a Wu law professor, who later served on Warren’s 2012 United States Senate campaign.
At Boston City Council, Wu has authored a series of ordinances that have been enacted: prevent the city from hiring health insurers that discriminate in their coverage against transgender people, protect wetlands, and support adaptation to climate change, enact a ban on plastic bags, adopting the Community Option Aggregation and providing paid parental leave to municipal employees. She also spearheaded a successful effort to implement short-term rental regulations.
Wu has advocated reforming the city’s zoning and permitting system, including abolishing the Boston Planning and Development Agency, which she says is overly politicized and lacks transparency. She has also advocated for free public transportation. Wu has spoken out in favor of “demilitarizing” the Boston Police Department and establishing an unarmed community security crisis response system that would take responsibility for non-violent calls to 9-1-1.
