Friends, family and law enforcement officials are still on the lookout for a local student and avid hiker who may be lost in the forests of the Chattahoochee National Forest. Lucas Baxter, 18, was last seen leaving the University of North Georgia campus on Friday. He was wearing round glasses, a dyed shirt and a teal backpack, according to a statement from the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office.
His gold Honda was later found parked near the Appalachian Trail in Woody Gap off Highway 60. Since his disappearance, multiple searches have been conducted in the area, but there have been no signs of the student, authorities said.
According to the Facebook post:
I spent time on the Appalachian Trail today in cold, rainy weather, interacting with hikers and spreading trail magic while searching for 18-year-old UNG student Lucas Baxter. He is an avid hiker who likes to get off the trail and explore the niches created by the rocks. His car was found at the entrance to Woody Gap, which is a little north of Dahlonega, near Suches. Hikers sometimes call it Preacher’s Rock and many of the ones I met today were heading up the impressive Blood Mountain.
The best way to help is to share your information with any experienced hiker. The Sheriff’s Department doesn’t want to have to rescue well-meaning novice hikers on this rugged terrain. Don’t try to look outside of the test alone or without the proper equipment and experience.
If you know someone who belongs to trail groups or hikers, ask them to share it with anyone who may have been on this part of the trail as of Oct 22. Any information or sighting should be reported to the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Department at 1-706-864-3633.
This is the son of a friend and they are haunted by concern because he would not do a night walk without his equipment. He was last seen wearing the bottom clothing and a black backpack commonly used for a day hike. He may have been lost or injured and we have to find him.
