He graduated from Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In the 2016 NHL Draft, the Toronto Maple Leafs picked JD in the third round, 72nd overall. However, he did not have the same amount of success as his brother Jordan. Later, in 2021, JD signed a two-year contract with the AHL Bruins to continue his hockey career.
