He began his football career as an outstanding quarterback at Sentinel High School, receiving all-state honors. He then played for Eastern Washington from 1980 to 1983. The 2015 SEC Coach of the Year worked as an offensive coordinator, quarterback, wide receiver, and assistant head coach at several universities including Montana, Louisville, and Alabama. In 2012, Colorado State University appointed him as head coach. Following his career at Colorado, the two-time SEC Eastern Division champion joined Florida. In 2018, the two-time MAC West Division champion joined Michigan as a wide receivers coach before becoming head coach in 2019.
