According to official reports, Justice Fathima Beevi, a former governor of Tamil Nadu and the Supreme Court’s first female judge died on Thursday in a private hospital in this city. M. Fathima Beevi, the daughter of Khadeeja Beevi and Annaveettil Meer Sahib, was born on April 30, 1927, into a rowdy family in Pathanamthitta, Kingdom of Travancore, now part of Kerala, India. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from University College in Thiruvananthapuram after attending Pathanamthitta’s Town School and Catholicate High School. Fathima Beevi earned a B.L. from the Government Law College in Thiruvananthapuram. She was appointed Governor of Tamil Nadu on January 25, 1997. Shankar Dayal Sharma, then-President of India, appointed her as Governor of Tamil Nadu and Justice Sukhdev Singh Kang, former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court, as Governor of Kerala, stating that “their experience of and insights into the workings of the Constitution and the laws comprise valuable assets.”

She dismissed the four condemned convicts’ appeals for compassion in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case in her role as state governor. The prisoners’ compassion petitions to the Governor requested her to use her powers under Article 161 of the Constitution.
