A man who killed his wife with a hammer has been told the victim’s family and friends will be released from prison in less than two months.British Airways captain Robert Brown beat Joanna Simpson to death with a hammer in October 2010 while her two young children cowered in the playroom.Brown then dumped the 46-year-old man’s body in a makeshift coffin in Windsor Great Park.He was acquitted of murder by a jury at Reading Crown Court in May 2011, but was jailed after previously admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.Brown was sentenced to 24 years in prison for manslaughter and two years for obstructing the coroner from performing his duties.Ms Simpsons’ family have been told she will be released on license the week of November 6 after serving 13 years of her 26-year sentence, as the lesser sentence means she will not face the Parole Board.
Ms Simpson’s family and friends say they are still waiting to hear whether Justice Minister Alex Chalk will step in and block the automatic eviction.Mr Chalk had previously promised Ms Simpson’s family he would do “everything” to keep the public safe.They will meet with the minister of justice in October.Ms Simpson’s best friend Hetti Barkworth-Nanton said: “Whilst the Justice Secretary has promised to ensure justice is served in this case and that the British public are kept safe, it is more important than ever that a dangerous killer is not exposed on our streets.
“There can’t be another Jo.”Diana Parkes, Ms Simpson’s mother, said: “Action is needed to prevent Robert Brown from being automatically released after serving just 13 years of a 26-year prison sentence.“His release poses a major risk to Joanna Simpson’s family and friends, as well as the wider public, particularly women. “He is a critical public protection case.Reliving my daughter’s brutal murder at the hands of Brown is emotionally draining.
No mother should lose her child in such horrific circumstances. We all live in great fear.But we know this is the only way to ensure the justice secretary fully understands how dangerous Brown is. We therefore urgently call on the Lord Chancellor to ensure the safety of the public by intervening to prevent his release and keep him behind bars.”A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “Joanna Simpson was brutally murdered and needlessly taken from her family in a cowardly, senseless attack.The Lord Chancellor met with his loved ones in May and will continue to pay close personal attention to the case, as he reiterated on Sunday.
