Ted Silary Wiki – Ted Silary Biography

Ted Silary, a Philadelphia high school sportswriter, died Thursday at the age of 72. The news of his death was revealed by Pat McLoone on Twitter.

He wrote: “It saddens me to report that Ted Silary, a great friend to many, has passed away at the age of 72. I owe you my career. I firmly believe that no one anywhere, at any time, covered high school sports better than Ted. It’s amazing to think about how many young lives Ted Silary touched and influenced in a positive way. Just the nicknames alone had to be hundreds.”

Who was Ted Silary?

For many years, Silary covered high school sports for The Philadelphia Bulletin and The Philadelphia Daily News before launching his well-known website TedSilary.com. His website was famous for having all the information you could ever need about high school sports in the area.

“The site, a Mount Everest of information that looks right at you from the home page, was not just living history. It was a bulletin board for a community,” Mike Jensen of The Philadelphia Inquirer had written in 2019 in an article shortly after Silary announced that he would no longer add to the page.

“Perhaps the best part of the site is that you didn’t have to be the best player in town to get your recognition. It’s one thing to have a list of Philadelphia’s leading scorers from 2000 to 2015. It’s quite another to list everyone who scored at least 15 points per game,” he added.

The public and his fans have expressed their grief over his death and have poured tributes on Twitter.

“RIP the great Ted Silary,” Mike Jensen said on Twitter. “If I’ve talked to 700 people from Philly Hoops over the years, 500 mentioned Ted’s name. Ted was very generous with (post-retirement) ideas. Before he retired, he was the fiercest of competitors for all of us Inquirer folks. He could have covered anything, he chose the one from HS”.
