Ms Wilkinson won the award and delivered her speech which generated intense media coverage of the case, resulting in ACT Chief Justice Lucy McCallum adjourning proceedings to protect Mr Lehrmann’s right to a fair trial.
She also experienced severe criticism in the media following the trial delay, which included inaccurate reporting of the Chief Justice’s sentencing. Ms Chrysanthou asked Mr Drumgold why she did not take the opportunity to correct the record on Ms Wilkinson in open court.
“There was nothing but misinformation about this (case) and the people associated with it…all the media is misrepresenting this whole trial and all the allegations, so at what point do I stop correcting the public record? ” she answered her.
Drumgold said he didn’t think he was in a position to fix the reports on Wilkinson, but he acknowledged in retrospect that he should have corrected the matter in court. “I just couldn’t change the flow of the media, I couldn’t get the media to change their reporting,” she said.
Ms Chrysanthou told him that “the answer he just gave is illogical and irrational and contrary to human experience.” She then went on to suggest that he somehow “telepathically” knew what Wilkinson and the lawyer were thinking.
