Joshua Minton Wiki – Joshua Minton Biography

Joshua Russell Minton of Millers Creek tried to run from officers during a traffic stop that led police on a wild chase. A herd of heroic cows helped his human police friends track down a North Carolina man who was running from police during a high-speed chase.

The suspect abandoned his car in the area of US Highway 421 and US Highway 221 in Deep Gap and fled on foot into a grassy field. He was arrested Tuesday after some cows turned him in. He was charged with evading arrest with a motor vehicle, driving with a revoked license, and disorderly conduct.

Minton’s next court date is scheduled for June 28 in Watauga County. One officer said, ‘You can’t make this up…it’s weird…and it’s great.’ It’s unclear how many cows were involved in the chase and whether they were mooing during capture, but officials were grateful for the animals getting into action.

Police said officers lost track of the suspect due to his reckless driving and the cows helped guide officers to the area where Minton was hiding. “The cows communicated with officers to the best of their ability and ultimately had officers follow them to the suspect’s location.”

The department expressed its gratitude to the cows for their ‘unexpected but welcome’ help. Boone’s Sgt. Dennis O’Neal told WCNC Charlotte said, “Officers noticed when they were conducting their ground search for the individual that the cows in a certain pasture began to move.”

“Based on that movement, they sensed the suspect was in the cow area. That was how the cows helped in the capture of him.’ “Apparently, the cows do not want the suspected criminals loitering in their pasture and quickly assisted our officers by leading them directly to where the suspect was hiding,” the news release said.

‘In addition to thanking our officers and deputies for putting themselves in harm’s way; obviously, we want to express our gratitude to the cows for their help,’ police said. On Thursday, the department shared a Facebook post of the incident that said it “opens up all sorts of questions about the role of bovines in fighting crime.”

‘Honestly, it’s something we haven’t considered until now. As we examine the obvious next steps to incorporate a Bovine Tracing Unit into our department’s law enforcement capabilities, there are many factors we will need to consider,” they wrote. Some of the questions posed were: How adaptable are cows to a variety of police jobs or can they just find hiding suspects?’

‘Are cows more profitable than K-9 dogs? How will we transport the cows to the places? Is this compatible with the Town’s sustainability goals in terms of the types of vehicles needed and are there obviously methane issues? And what about the cost of training, veterinary care, ballistic vests, etc.?’

‘We at the Boone Police Department are always looking for better ways to serve our community. We may be a small town, but we are a forward-thinking and progressive law enforcement agency,’ they wrote.
