Dennis Barnes, who is in his senior year of high school despite his age, applied to 200 colleges across the country as of last August. A 16-year-old from New Orleans was offered more than $9 million in college scholarships and received admission offers from 125 schools and counting.

Wherever he goes, Barnes plans to pursue double majors in computer science and criminal justice. The bright student has not yet decided which university he will attend, but he will announce it next Tuesday. He is now looking to break the world record for the highest amount in scholarship offers: In 2019, a Louisiana high school student raised $9.4 million.

“My goal is to get to $10 million,” Barnes told local station WWL-TV. The high school is now working with Guinness to confirm his record. I applied to the university in August, with the intention of raising the bar for admission to the university. Decision letters were overflowing in my mailbox and hundreds of scholarship offers,’ he told WWL.

Barnes has a 4.98 GPA and holds leadership positions in his high school chapter of the National Honor Society. He is also fluent in Spanish and is already seeking college credit at the University of the South in New Orleans.

He said that he wasn’t always top of his class. ‘I will say that I have not always been an outstanding student. I have always dedicated myself to doing my school work and getting good grades like the average kid,” he said.

‘It’s not normal, I know it’s not of course, but I started somewhere. There is a starting point for everything. I started and then I realized where I was going and when I realized which way I was going, I used my momentum and ended up further than I ever thought I would have been,” Barnes told the station.

According to this mother, Reba Barnes, her success was to be expected. ‘[He] has been like this since he was a baby. He has always been very inquisitive, always on top of everything,” he said.

“If I had a field trip, I would put the paper right in front of me, ‘Mom, sign this.’ I never had to ask him for his report card. He has always been diligent and determined in everything he does,” she added.

Louisiana fellow Normandie Cormier was accepted to 139 colleges in 2019. She applied to schools through the Common App and the Common Black College App, which allows students to apply to hundreds of schools at once.

She is now pursuing a master’s degree at Louisiana State University and runs XollegePass, a company that advises disadvantaged students and children from low-income families on how to find academic success. Cormier told The Guardian on Tuesday that the help she was offered eventually grew to $9.4 million and that at that time she sought recognition from Guinness World Records.

She said Guinness told her she wasn’t aware of anyone being offered more scholarship money, but she couldn’t set a world record as higher education is structured differently around the world. A Guinness spokesperson confirmed to The Guardian that it does not keep track of most scholarship offers made to a single person.
