After attending his own father’s burial, a son was murdered in a car accident on the way home when his cousin, who was intoxicated and using drugs, crashed his Mercedes into a lamppost. When he wrecked at 12.40 a.m. on May 1, 2021, on Graiglwyd Road in Townhill, Swansea, driver Michael Stock, 54, was under the influence of a potent combination of alcohol, cocaine, and cannabis. Dean Heaven, 46, was killed.
In the hours before the late-night collision, when Stock lost control of his car and span across the road, clipping parked cars, a lamppost, and a bus shelter before flipping on its roof, Swansea Crown Court heard that the two men had attended Mr. Heaven’s father’s funeral and wake.
Michael Stock was High on a Cocktail of Drugs and Alcohol When He Crashed
According to prosecutor Brian Simpson, Stock was traveling in his Mercedes between 70 and 89 mph on residential streets when the accident happened. While Stock was left hanging upside down from the seatbelt inside the destroyed automobile, Mr. Heaven was flung three meters from the car and had fatal head injuries.
Following “serious and unsurvivable head and rib fractures,” Mr. Heaven was pronounced dead at the scene in Townhill, Swansea, soon after 1am, despite the arrival of police and paramedics.
Stock was tested at 5 am, five hours after the collision, and was found to have 117 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood, five times the legal limit of 80 mg. In addition, he was intoxicated while driving due to marijuana and a cocaine metabolite.
Back calculations were not performed to determine Stock’s blood-alcohol level at the time of the collision, according to Judge Paul Thomas KC, who expressed his “astonishment” at this.
Stock, of Skewen, Neath, confessed that her reckless driving resulted in a fatality. He received a five-year driving prohibition in addition to two years, eight month in a prison sentence.
Tim Evans, the defense attorney, said that Stock “loved dearly” Mr. Heaven and wished he could go back in time.
He said Stock shown “the ultimate level of remorse” and wished he had been the one to pass away rather than his cousin.
He never wants to get behind the wheel again because of what he did to his cherished buddy and cousin Dean, according to Mr. Evans.
Stock “drove at grossly excessive speed while out of his head,” according to udge Paul Thomas KC.
According to WalesOnline, in her family impact statement, Mr. Heaven’s daughter Jade raved about her father as her “first love, best friend, and the person who had made me smile.”
The only thing that was clear was loss, she said, adding that there was “no goodbye, no answers.”
